Introducing the free paper "RAW.17" by students from Tama Art University

Headline: Body text:

We would like to introduce you to "RAW," a free paper produced and published by volunteer students majoring in product design at Tama Art University. We spoke to editor-in-chief Tsuchida-kun (left in the photo) and deputy editor-in-chief Kimura-kun (right in the photo), who created this ad page, to find out more about the production process.

RAW is produced with the concept of conveying the appeal of product design, mainly through interviews with designers who are making the world a better place and introducing the works of students. The theme of this issue, the 17th, is "Toys and Excitement."

Morisawa also placed an advertisement in this issue for the first time. Kimura-kun was in charge of creating the page using Morisawa fonts.

Kimura's proposal was to cut out pieces of advertising paper with scissors and assemble them to create a "calendar tree!" This was an unprecedented idea that only a student studying product design could come up with.

We asked Kimura about his thoughts on creating this edition of the paper.

When I started creating this piece, the first thing that excited me was the shape of the typeface, "tunnel," so I chose the exciting character "wa," which is also the theme of this issue.

I usually use fonts in a size of around 10 points for text information. Because of this, I have never paid much attention to the shapes of the characters in each font. However, this time, I spent a long time making the "wa" (circle) bigger, smaller, and placing it in various places, and I noticed for the first time things like, "This line here isn't simply straight," or, "It's been adjusted to this extent, wow!"

I had never looked so closely at a single character before, so I had a lot of fun discovering new things.

I am thrilled that students studying product design were able to "turn on" their sensitivity to fonts!!!

We encourage everyone to get "RAW.17" and create your own original RAW calendar.
