In August, Morisawa Inc. held an online training session for teachers and staff at elementary and junior high schools in Nishinomiya City to help them make better use of UD fonts in the educational field.
UD font plan for public organizationsNishinomiya City, which has introduced UD fonts, uses UD fonts on official school computers.
(We invited a member of the Nishinomiya City Board of Education to discuss the background to the introduction of the system and its current status.)UD Font Seminar Day 1 ReportIt is also featured in archived videos (registration required).
This time, as a benefit of introducing the UD font plan for public organizations, we held a training session that included a workshop where teachers and staff members could brush up on their own handouts and documents.
First, a lecturer from Morisawa gave a lecture on "The Basics of Universal Design Fonts" and "Tips for Effective Layout." He introduced the background and evidence behind the development of Universal Design Fonts and explained key points for creating materials to communicate information more effectively.
After that, we held a workshop to use the materials provided to make the documents easier to read. We will introduce some examples of actual improvements that were made.
Example 1: Notice from the PTA to parents

This is a notice for parents. By adjusting the line spacing of the main text, you can see that the document is now organized and easy to read, even when the font size is reduced.
Example 2: Junior high school class newsletter

This is a class newsletter for junior high school students. By making the headings bold and boxing different types of information, the speed at which information can be obtained is increased.
Post-training survey
In a post-training survey of the participants, 12 out of 14 responded that the training would be useful in their future work.

We also received the following feedback in our comments:

I usually create worksheets and class newsletters,I didn't really think about fonts and other aspects from the perspective of readability. So I'll make use of what you've taught me.

We will start learning Roman letters from the second semester,I thought the four-line drawing method was very useful.I'd love to watch the video you posted in the chat until the end. I'd like to try it out during the summer holidays.

The explanations were easy to understand and I learned a lot. I was surprised to learn that it could even improve my academic ability. From now on, you will look at the "letters" that abound in the world in a different way.I also learned a lot from your last point of view, "whether it gets across to the other person."
Although the training was a limited time opportunity to brush up on your skills, I believe that after taking the course, everyone gained a way of thinking that will help them create materials that are more effective at communicating their ideas.
Thank you to all the teachers and staff who participated in the training.
