UD Digital Textbook Font Used in Japanese Language Teaching Materials (Mount Holyoke College)

Headline: Body text:

This article introduces examples of how UD fonts are being used in various educational settings.
This time, we spoke with Professor Nemoto Naoko and Professor Chang Jinha, who created teaching materials using the UD Digital Textbook Font for students studying Japanese at Mount Holyoke College in the United States.

Professor Nemoto created hiragana quiz questions for university students in two fonts: Mincho and UD. When he allowed the students to choose freely, more than half of the 27 students chose the UD font quiz.

Students who chose UD fonts cited reasons such as "it's cute" and "the lines are thick."

In his reading comprehension class, Professor Chang handed out two handouts to university students, one in Mincho font and the other in UD font, and asked the students to choose whichever they found easier to read. Apparently, 8 out of 12 students read the UD font.

All of the students had been studying Japanese for over a year and were familiar with the Mincho font used in their textbooks, so this was a somewhat surprising result.

Through this comparison, I realized that UD fonts are truly "easy to read" for learners.

Starting this semester, we have been saving our class slides as PDFs and posting them online so that the fonts will not change regardless of the environment in which they are downloaded. We have only just begun these comparisons, and we hope to continue making various attempts to create teaching materials that are easier for learners to read.

Thank you, Professor Nemoto and Professor Chang!
