Professor Junpei Oe

Q.What kind of work or production do you do?

My work mainly focuses on graphic design for advertisements, pamphlets, books, logos, web design, and illustrations. This year I launched a company called MIHA LLC, and am currently preparing to launch a multi-faceted business that includes merchandise sales, food and drink, art, events, workshops, and design.

Q.What is the role of typefaces in your work?

In my case, I often first decide on a typeface, and then create a design based on that worldview. In other words, I treat typefaces as the axis of a design. If you cram in too many typefaces, the axis of the design will become unstable, so I try to keep the number of typefaces in one design as low as possible.

Q. What was the moment when your font senses were turned on?

When I was a student, I was influenced by a class taught by my professor at the time, Professor Helmut Schmidt, and read a book called "The Universe of Type," which left me speechless when I came across the font called "Univers." The beauty of its minimal yet delicate form has the expressive power to spread like the universe, just as its name suggests. I believe that encounter was the trigger that completely drew me into typography, and turned on my font switch.

Q.What is your favorite font?

Speaking of MORISAWA PASSPORT,."Main Mincho"or."Baskerville","Garamond" is one of my favorites because I find it easy to use.

My latest obsession is Morisawa's new font "A1Gothic" That's right.
