The 5th meeting of the 2nd Moripass Club was held in September. Two months after the last meeting, each team once again gave their interim presentation. With the time until completion fast approaching, what activities were carried out by the teams? Here is a report on a fulfilling day.
Which comes first: the content or the guests?
First up was the event team, who announced the direction of the event, including the structure of the event and the creators they would like to invite as talk guests. While the content of the talks and workshops may change depending on the guest, they also introduced potential guests and explained the reasons for their selection.
Hashizume then asked, "Is it okay for the content of the event to change depending on the guest?" He then offered some harsh advice: "It's important to ask guests not because they are easy to ask, but because you have to verbalize what you really want to do. It's rude to the other person if the fundamental reason why you want to invite them is unclear."
Furthermore, they pointed out that they should not be vague about what they really want to do, and that it is necessary to share the purpose within the team no matter who they invite. The event team decided to thoroughly discuss these points during today's subcommittee meeting.
Meanwhile, the Free Magazine team announced their special feature plans, the creators they will interview, who will be in charge of each page, and the upcoming schedule. It seems that discussions have progressed considerably in the two months since the last time.
Hashizume not only praised the progress, but also the well-balanced nature of the special feature projects, and a concrete path to completion was also in sight, with Morisawa potentially able to cooperate depending on the project.
Everyone votes to decide! What will be the results of the cover competition?
Also on this day, a competition was held to design the cover of a free magazine, with five members of the team running.
Each participant presented their cover idea, and everyone, including the advisor and event team, voted to decide! The deciding factor was not the level of completion at the current stage, but the "concept." How did the five participants express the theme of the free magazine, "dried fish," on the cover?
Shiba said his cover "emphasized the dried fish feel, Morisawa style, and student feel," while Tomokiyo presented a cover that made the text look pictorial, aiming to make it easier for readers to understand.
Hirata also used bold letters in a deliberate layout to create an impactful cover that would make people think, "What is this magazine?!" Yoshida designed the process of how living things are dried. Ichihashi showed off a masterpiece using a laser cutter to express the different textures of the letters with noise.
Each of them had considered the cover from various perspectives, such as how to convey the contents of the magazine, what impression they wanted viewers to have, whether it was an interesting design, etc. After each of them presented their concept, the voting members were left racking their brains as they carefully considered the options.
The results will be announced at the end of the meeting!
Members continue their discussions, even sacrificing breaks
While the voting results were being tallied, each team was seen wasting no time in serious discussions.
The free magazine team began work on outlining in detail what each person in charge needs to do in the future. Before splitting up to begin full-scale production, they also discussed common matters and rules for the entire magazine.
The event team is lagging behind the free magazine team, so we will be moving forward with discussions quickly.
"I want to convey the fun of handwritten letters, which we don't normally get to experience," he said. "But even if I ask them to do it, I'm sure they'll be wondering, 'Why handwritten letters at a Morisawa Font event?'" "If I explain that the goal is to let people experience the fun of letters and typefaces, they'll understand."
We then filled in the gaps in our understanding, such as confirming what we wanted to do and how to communicate it to the guests, as pointed out earlier.
There will also be an opportunity to interact with Kansai members at the next meeting!
The results of the competition have finally been announced. The work selected for the cover was by Shiba!
The reason it was chosen was because it was based on the concept of being "made by students." The font used for the title also conveys the idea that it is a magazine where students put their free ideas into practice, which was highly praised.
A final presentation was also made based on today's session.
The event team explained their revised goals, explained how the potential guests fit into the event they wanted to create, and also got a clearer idea of what they needed to communicate to the public.
Finally, the Kansai Moripass Club's activities in August were introduced. Seeing the tour of the showroom, which is unique to the Osaka headquarters, some members couldn't help but exclaim, "I'm so jealous!" At the next meeting, the group plans to connect with the Kansai members via video call to further their mutual interaction.
The event team showed signs of impatience with the progress of the free magazine team, including the cover competition, and the free magazine team was also curious about the progress of their Kansai members who were also creating magazines, making it a day of mutual stimulation for both sides.
The next meeting will be in November. For the final presentation, the production will need to be almost complete. Don't miss the members pushing forward towards their goal!
