Morisawa has collaborated with university professors to develop UD fonts.Readability evidenceHowever, from a business perspectiveIs it really easy to read? Many people are probably wondering about this, so Morisawa conducted an internal trial with the participation of its employees.

As a result, UD fonts are...

Reading speed...Approximately 2.4% faster
Legibility (recognizing errors in the text)Approximately 1.4% advantage

It has become!

Morisawa has many back office and other tasks that are not related to font design, but even those staff members have the same passion for font design.Just changing the font can make a big differenceWe received many comments like this, and it seems that people have rediscovered how easy it is to read.

How to try it

Examples of business documents used in the trial

For the trial, we prepared several patterns of business documents created using standard typefaces and documents created using UD typefaces. These documents already contained typos.

The subjects were asked to read these materials in random combinations, and the following two points were measured:

  • How many characters can you read in a certain amount of time?
  • How many typos did you find?

After tallying up the results of 150 participants, Morisawa came up with the following results, as mentioned at the beginning:

Reading speed...Approximately 2.4% faster
Legibility (recognizing errors in the text)…Approximately 1.4% advantage

It has become.

Looking at the results, it certainly seems that UD fonts are easier to read.
Being able to read quickly improves work efficiency, and high readability helps prevent mistakes and improves communication efficiency. But how effective is this?

Easy to read and time saving!

In business situations, there are many opportunities to read text, such as emails and documents. If we assume that we spend 20% of our day reading text, we can read only 2.4% faster.Work hours can be reduced by 8.71 hours per person per yearThis will be the case.

When this calculation is applied to all employees, it has the potential to lead to significant reductions in labor costs across the company.

UD fonts for work style reform

With the spread of teleworking, many people are spending more time looking at monitors while working and communicating in text more frequently than before.Feeling strain on the eyesThis is a common sentiment heard across industries.

Being able to read text quickly means less strain on the eyes.Health considerationsThis will reduce the burden on employees,Work style reformThis will help.

There are already cases where local governments and companies have introduced UD fonts company-wide and are using UD fonts for regular work in Office software, etc. With momentum building for work style reform, it seems likely that the use of UD fonts to improve business operations and working environments will become even more widespread in the future!
