Mr. Tomoaki Yako
Q. What genre of classes do you teach?
A. I'm in charge of graphic design.
Q. The moment when the font's sensitivity was turned on
A. It was a lettering class in my first year of junior high school. That's when I realized, "Letters are so interesting!" and it opened my eyes to them.
Q. What is your favorite Morisawa font and why?
A. "UD Shin Go" and "Shin Go".
Versatile. The thin ones can be used simply, and the thick ones can be used for pop art. When I was working at a design company, there was a time when I could only use Ryumin and Shin Go, and even then the Shin Go typefaces were a great help!
Q. What do you think of the students at this school?
A. ...It's a threat!
She has a great personality, so I think if she were to let that develop, I wouldn't be able to compete. I think she'll eventually become my rival and be used as a stepping stone (laughs).
It's scary, but that's the job!
Q. The moment the switch turns "OFF"
A. In the end, my job is to create things, so I have to absorb something from everything. I naturally get used to that environment. I can't turn off, but that's not a problem.
It's a disease that makes me constantly on, and no matter what I do, I always think about whether it will be useful (laughs).
Q. What would you like to challenge yourself with in the future? What are you interested in?
A. I would like to try a design that makes the most of text.
I feel like I've pretty much done my best with illustration-based and image-based designs, and I'm interested in how I can communicate and captivate people with just words.
