Tokyo Communication Arts College x Morisawa Industry-Academia Collaboration Project

In June 2017, a collaborative project between Morisawa and Tokyo Communication Arts College (TCA) began as an industry-academia collaboration project!

This project aims to get more people interested in fonts with fresh ideas from students. This time, we asked students to think about the novelty goods Morisawa will use, and when and how to use them so that recipients will feel the fun and importance of fonts.

Before starting the project, we wanted people to learn more about characters and fonts, so the Moripass Club advisor also visited TCA and gave a seminar on Morisawa's history, how to choose characters, and how to create easy-to-read typesetting.

The students' expressions were pure seriousness!

At the end of the event, the participants looked at Morisawa's previous novelties and had a lively conversation about what kind of novelty item they would like to have.

Now, the interim presentation!

The interim results were announced in July.

Novelties such as sticky notes, clear files, and keyboard stickers, tools that allow you to learn while having fun with fonts, campaigns linked to blogs, and more.
Each participant narrowed down their main target, considered a concept, and then came up with a wide variety of proposals!

Although it was their first presentation, the TCA members delivered confident presentations.
"Let's explain why we used that font for the novelty item."
"When writing a proposal, it's easier to see the difference if you use different font weights for the main text and headings!"
"Let's develop a story that leads to the goal!"
The students' masterpieces are well received, and they also receive enthusiastic advice from the Moripass club advisor.

They will be further refining the plan and preparing mockups for the novelty items ahead of the final announcement this fall. What kind of novelty items will be used? Stay tuned!

This collaborative project with Tokyo Communication Arts College (TCA) began with the desire to turn on the font switch in more people. We asked TCA students to think about novelty goods to be used by Morisawa and how they could be used to make people realize the fun and importance of fonts. In the previous article, we reported on the progress up to the mid-term presentation. This time, we will focus on the final presentation and the Grand Prize and Planning Award winners! For the final presentation, the students came to Morisawa Inc.'s Tokyo headquarters to give a presentation. They now make their own flyers and public relations materials.

  On this day, Morisawa's department that produces novelties and the department that plans what font to use also participated as final judges.

We will ask questions to see if the novelty item is appropriate for corporate promotion and whether the font selection is appropriate.

The Grand Prize went to "Morisawa Font Customized Sticker"

After a rigorous judging process, the winner of the prestigious "Grand Prize" was Takemoto Kenya. Based on the concept that if we want students to experience the fun of fonts, we first need to get them to become font fans, Takemoto proposed "customizable stickers" that allow students to customize their favorite keyboards with Morisawa fonts, and "sticky notes" with character expressions. The deciding factors were his wide variety of font choices, including Gothic, Mincho, and designer typefaces, and his choice of a keyboard, something students use every day!

What about the planning award aimed at realizing the idea?

The winner of the "Planning Award" to actually bring the novelty items to life was To Gito. He proposed a badge with the onomatopoeia written in the perfect font, and a campaign on a contest website where people could submit original onomatopoeia.

  This time, the judges received many positive comments about the fun of the participatory campaign, so instead of badges, they decided to create a website where you can express onomatopoeia in your favorite font. We will introduce this website in the next article. Stay tuned!

In the previous article, we introduced the Grand Prize and Planning Award winning works from our collaborative project with Tokyo Communication Arts College (TCA).

For the "Planning Award," the winners were to create a website that could be expressed in any font, based on the idea of a "contest website where original onomatopoeia can be submitted," proposed by To Gito.

A website where you can post your own onomatopoeia has been completed!

We actually met with Mr. Toh and finalized the design.

The name "onomatype" comes from the fact that it allows you to express onomatopoeia in any typeface you like.
