Yamanashi City Hall is working on universal design throughout the city. To encourage all employees to use UD fonts, they implemented a "Communicative" Document Design Program. This article introduces the training session and feedback from the participants.

Promoting UD fonts and aiming to realize a society where no one is left behind

As Yamanashi City works on universal design across the entire city government, it wanted to promote the use of "UD fonts," developed based on the concept of universal design, within the city government, and became interested in Morisawa's "Communicative" document design program.

Here are some comments from the staff who planned the program.

In order to create a city where everyone can live comfortably, Yamanashi City is incorporating the concept of universal design into various areas of city administration and working on its operations.

We had seen the benefits of UD fonts in other cities and recognized their benefits. We believe that through writing, we can help create a society in which no one is left behind. And in this cityTo encourage the unified use of UD fontsSo we asked Morisawa, the font manufacturer, to provide training.

Not only knowledge of UD fonts, but also the skills to create materials that "communicate" with others,I realized that this would help solve the problems facing Yamanashi City.

The training sessions held within the program not only let participants know about UD fonts, but also allow them to learn the know-how of creating materials. The appeal of the program was that staff could get hands-on experience and receive feedback from the instructors.

We will introduce sample materials used in the training session and comments from staff.

Not only did this allow employees who were unfamiliar with UD fonts to learn the significance of using UD fonts, but the flyers that employees had produced in-house were created based on individual tastes, and many of the materials had inconsistent designs and the information was difficult to understand.

I was also very interested in the fact that I could learn the know-how of how to design flyers and notices so that information is more easily conveyed to the recipient, rather than simply replacing the font.We thought this would help solve the problems facing Yamanashi City.

At the training session, the materials created by the trainees will be corrected by the instructor,I was also attracted by how easy it was to understand how to specifically remake the materials.

Employees understand the purpose and value of universal design

While there is a call to promote universal design, if it is simply handed down from the top down, many employees are left wondering, "Why is universal design being asked of us?" and "How can we incorporate it into our work?"

Here are some comments from staff who said that after participating in the training session, they were able to understand and use UD fonts.

  • This timeTraining session promotes universal design initiativesIt has become.
  • I think this has raised awareness of the need to use UD fonts.
  • Even though I was told to use them, I never had the opportunity to learn about UD fonts.Using something without knowing its meaning is different from using it knowing its meaning, so I'm glad I learned about it properly and can now use it with confidence.

Why do we work on universal design? Why is consideration given to text?
Through the training session, I was able to understand the "purpose" and "value" and work on creating materials.

Improve and solidify your skills with personalized feedback

Participants not only receive "input" through lectures, but also try to remake the materials."Output" that solidifies skillsand,Individual "feedback (advice sheet)" received from the instructorBased on this, I gained practical skills in document creation.

Below we will introduce the changes in the materials used by the participants.
The instructor gave individual feedback on how the materials created by the students could be improved, which made a big difference in how easy the materials were to read and understand.

Next, we will introduce the results of the participant survey.
By receiving individual feedback on the materials they created, they were able to take the material more personally and apply it to their work, which allowed all participants to feel that their skills had improved.

By remaking and providing feedback on materials that are actually used in work, understanding is promoted and skills are solidified, leading to the development of personnel who can put what they have learned into practice in the field even after training.

Improving staff's document creation skillsGreat benefits for the entire organization

The survey results show that by improving individual skills,This leads to significant organizational benefits, such as smooth document creation, improved information dissemination capabilities, reduced work hours, and budget reductions. We received feedback from customers who said they realized this.

  • Creating effective materialsKnowledge saves timebecomes.
  • I believe that being conscious of creating materials that can be communicated to others will have a positive impact on the progress of work. I would like to make this known throughout the entire agency.
  • I think this has led to the spread of effective document creation.
  • As the skills of our staff improve, we can produce designs in-house and outsource printing.Leading to budget cutsI think so.

Thank you to everyone who participated in the training session.
We received feedback that making documents easier to read will lead to skill improvements for both individuals and organizations.
