Q. What kind of creative activities do you do?

A. I mainly work on book binding and page design, focusing on paper media.

Q. The moment when the font's sensitivity was turned on

A. It all started when I chose to take a digital typography class in the fall semester of my second year of university.

Up until then, I had been studying mainly animation production, but I felt that this was not what I wanted to do in the future. In that class, I created an original font, and it was so much fun that I became so absorbed in it that I even forgot to eat.

Q. What is your favorite Morisawa font and why?

A. "A1It's "Mincho." I like how the ink pools where the lines intersect give it a softer feel.

Recently, I've also been thinking about "Kamo Lime." It's a cute, girly font, but it's not too assertive. I'd like to use it in my work, as the characters and letters stand out when binding a book.

Q. What do you think of the teachers at this school?

A. The advantage of the Media Design Department is that you can study a wide range of genres. There are many professors who specialize in each field, so when I was creating my portfolio, various professors, regardless of their field, gave me advice.

Q. The moment the switch turns "OFF"

A. When I was doing club activities!

I'm the leader of the Koto club, which has about 30 members from different departments. I usually work alone during creative activities, so playing in an ensemble with the other members of the club is a great way to change my mood.

Q. What would you like to challenge yourself with in the future? What are you interested in?

A. When I'm walking around town or looking at the cover of a book in a bookstore, I wonder what font it is, but I want to have an "absolute font sense" that lets me know right away that it's that font! (laughs)
