MOZ is a typography magazine created over the course of a year by students majoring in design at the Graduate School of Fine Arts at Tokyo University of the Arts. This time, we will be introducing issue 5 (published in September 2018).
The theme of this issue is "Letters and Fiction." Letters are an essential part of expressing fiction. This time, we've looked at "Letters and Fiction" from a variety of different angles.
When he visited Morisawa to give a presentation, he presented a plan that was close to being a finished product. Morisawa employees also asked questions, such as how to incorporate text into the broad theme of "fiction."
Then, in September 2018, "MOZ" No. 5 was successfully completed.
This is a volume packed with content that will draw you into a world of fiction from the cover!
Highlights of this issue
・"The Kyoko Shimbun" is a website that publishes unique, homemade fake news. Under the guidance of UK, the owner of the Kyoko Shimbun Company, MOZ editorial staff are taking on the challenge of creating a fictional newspaper. How will the "Real Fictional Newspaper," created to resemble a real newspaper, turn out?
Even if you can't read the words written, you can sometimes recognize them as letters. There are graphics that look like letters at first glance, but are not letters. The scope of letters is vague, and "letter-likeness" exists separately from the letters themselves. We interviewed graphic designer Tetsuo Suzuki, who has worked on numerous typography works.
Why is "microcosm" written as "cosmo" and then furigana-styled? Why are stickers that supplement text information placed on a simple design with few characters? This is a highly engaging conversation between critic Yokoyama Kosuke and the editor-in-chief of MOZ, which began with such simple questions.
・"Oh, [unknown character], you're not allowed to go into the river."
The "lost character" in the final sentence of Miyazawa Kenji's "Otsuberu and the Elephant" is a mystery that MOZ editorial staff will explore as they travel to places associated with Miyazawa.
Issue 5 of MOZ can also be read as an e-book.
