In the cover competition, two surprising designs tied for first place!

First, a cover competition was held with presentations from the visual team.

The four candidates were Seki, who designed large eyes in the style of a shojo manga, Wang, who used chicks and Cupid as motifs based on the theme of "love at first sight," Akagi, who captured "love at first sight" from multiple angles, including the waves of a pool and large eyes, and Ito, who used elements of typefaces and other round shapes to express the feeling of not being able to see what's around you when you look through a microscope.

As with the previous theme proposal, all members discussed and decided on the proposal to vote on. Various opinions were expressed, such as "It's cute, but the theme of 'love at first sight' is hard to convey at a glance," and "I personally really like the intuitive design that isn't bound by 'text'."

As a result of the voting, Seki and Ito's two designs tied for first place. Supportive comments were made in favor of the two designs, with some saying, "It will be fun to come up with a design for the circle together," and "It's easy to see the feeling of love at first sight. I'm most looking forward to seeing the polished, finished design." Everyone seems to be getting much better at presenting their ideas!

After final discussions, Seki's proposal was chosen for the cover. The advisor's feedback was that "it shows the theme of 'Love at first sight with the letters' in the most beautiful way. It could be improved even more with some polishing." Furthermore, Ito's proposal will be used on the inside pages. How it will appear will depend on future production.

Guest Ito Chikao was also invited for an interview.

This was followed by an input seminar on typesetting, a lunch break, and the presentation of the previous assignments, including assignments for the next committee meeting in July.

The assignment for each team is to submit a first draft! Team leaders are also selected, and each team will hold discussions to finalize details such as interview and writing schedules, division of roles, and team meetings.

"We have to get this done by a certain date," "We want to hold the team meeting on a day when at least three out of four of us can be there," and other such comments emerge from the members' schedule books, their expressions of impatience. Each team cannot afford to waste even a single day!

We also welcomed typeface designer Chikao Ito for an interview with the MOTC team.

We spoke to Ito about the typeface he created, "In'ei Mincho," about the thoughts behind it, the production process, how he became a typeface designer, and valuable stories from his university days.

It seems that the interview was very productive thanks to Ito-san's sincere responses to each of the many questions. Nakamura-kun also had a great time talking about his project to write a piece using the Inei Mincho font.

The next committee meeting will be to submit the first draft! What will we do and by when?

At the end of the session, each team presented the results of their approximately two-hour discussion. The advisors gave advice to the entire group on how to proceed in the future, including the importance of making use of an environment where they can consult with each other without being too stressed out, the importance of keeping track of schedules, and aligning the understanding within the team. The members seemed to be once again fired up!

After the meeting, a social gathering was held. The meeting was broadcast live to the Kansai region, and everyone raised a toast together. The advisor also presented participants with a poster by graphic designer Mitsuo Katsui.

When we asked the members about today's meeting and future productions,

"After discussions and consideration with other teams, we decided to change the direction of the content. There are still many uncertainties, so I'm a little worried, but I'm looking forward to what's to come!" (Nakamura)

"As we start making appointments for interviews, I feel like the project is finally becoming a reality. I would like to learn more about designers and typefaces as I work on future projects." (Yoshizawa)

There were voices saying:

The next meeting will be at the end of July. How will the members proceed in the two months that seem long but are actually short, towards submitting the first draft? We look forward to seeing even greater progress!
